It has been nearly three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite highly challenging conditions on the frontlines, constant attacks on energy infrastructure, and a rising civilian death toll, the Ukrainian people remain resilient and committed to achieving a just peace while holding Russia accountable for its crimes.

However, just as fire cannot burn without fuel, the resilience of Ukrainians cannot endure indefinitely without a reliable support network.

Though all forms of support are highly appreciated and encouraged, some are more effective than others in tackling the immediate challenges Ukraine is facing now. The examples of such forms of support include donations and information sharing.

Donations

Donations are the most reliable source of fuel for sustaining Ukrainian resilience. They directly address the needs of specific populations and significantly enhance their capability to withstand crises.

There are no small donations. 1 USD equals 42 UAH. This will buy you 3 packs of paracetamol. 7 USD (the price of one coffee in the US) equals 294 UAH. This will buy you a basic tourniquet that will save lives.

The most desirable donations are those to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. There is broad consensus among Ukrainians that providing systematic support to the army is the only way to address the root cause of the war, rather than its symptoms (like forced displacement, energy insecurity, and economic instability).

Many Ukrainians donate daily, helping trusted organizations raise funds for drones, portable power stations, thermal imagers, and other essential items. They have personal reasons to do so.

According to recent polls, 78% of Ukrainians have lost close relatives or friends due to Russian aggression. Many have died in battle.

There is a common misconception abroad that donating to the Ukrainian military might prolong the armed conflict and should therefore be discouraged. However, it is important to consider that Russia is waging the war of aggression, while Ukraine is defending itself on its territory. This means that the alternative to fighting would not be peace. It would be occupation.

On that note, the purpose of this passage is not to persuade everyone to focus their support solely on the army, but rather to demonstrate why there is nothing ethically wrong in doing so.

There are many non-military causes worthy of support. Feel free to scroll down and choose the initiative that resonates with you the most.

Many organizations offer monthly subscriptions. Consider this option if you'd like to support a cause systematically, helping these organizations improve their planning horizons and strengthen their institutional capacity.
